Callum, 22, was studying to become a civil engineer at university when he decided to supplement his final year of study with agency work.
He applied to an agency and within a short period of time was working as a labourer on a few key sites around South East Queensland. It was while on one of the jobs that a site foreman for one Queensland’s largest family-owned civil construction companies started talking to Callum about his future aspirations.
The foreman liked Callum’s attitude and his working style, which he had seen over a nine month period as an agency worker and he invited him to apply for an undergraduate position the company had coming up. Callum applied for the position and straight out of university had landed himself a full time position in his chosen area, location and was working with one of the leading companies in his field.
He is a big believer that the agency work provided him with many benefits, such as:
• An opportunity to connect within his field, while he was studying and earn an income.
• Real life experience on the job, which he says has changed the way he approaches his planning and designs.
• Gave him a foot in the door for his job in his chosen space – straight out of university, when many of his peers are still looking for work or have had to move in search of the right opportunities.
• To connect with a number of companies across South East Queensland.
Now, Callum is working as a full time civil engineer on some of Queensland’s leading residential and commercial projects around Brisbane and Ipswich.
